    Steven Spielberg Taking ‘Smash,’ Musical Based on NBC Series, to Broadway

    Smash,” the TV series about backstage drama that attracted a rabid but small fanbase when it aired for two seasons on NBC, has inspired an upcoming show that is eyeing a Broadway run. “Smash, A New Musical” is setting its sights on the Great White Way and its mega-watt producing team includes Steven Spielberg, WarnerMedia Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt, and “Chicago” producer Neil Meron.

    The Tony and Grammy-winning duo of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who penned over two dozen songs for the television show will provide the score, which will feature many of the songs that popped up on the TV series.

    David E. Kelley Boards Netflix Psychological Thriller ‘Anatomy of a Scandal’
    Big Little Lies” creator David E. Kelley and Melissa James Gibson, who was a showrunner on “House of Cards,” have attached as writers, showrunners and executive producers on Netflix six-part miniseries “Anatomy of a Scandal.”

    Netflix describes the show, which is based on Sarah Vaughan’s best-selling novel, as an “insightful and suspenseful series about a sexual consent scandal amongst British privileged elite and the women caught up in its wake.”

    S.J. Clarkson will direct all episodes, and also takes an executive producer credit. The show will be shot in the U.K.

    Kelley, whose recent credits include “Goliath” and “Mr. Mercedes,” and James Gibson, who also served as a writer on “The Americans,” will exec produce alongside Liza Chasin of 3Dot Productions, Bruna Papandrea, Steve Hutensky and Allie Goss of Made Up Stories. Vaughan and Margaret Chernin take co-executive producer credits.

    Exclusive: Sony Pictures has acquired Armored, a film adaptation of the new audio book written by Mark Greaney, who’s best known for writing the Gray Man bestsellers and who is also co-author of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan novels.

    Michael Bay is producing through his new deal at Sony Pictures along with Erwin Stoff of 3 Arts. They will set a writer quickly. The book will be released through Audible in late 2020 and published as a traditional novel at a later date.

    Though audiences will have to wait until 2021 for “Morbius” and “Venom 2” to hit the big screen, Sony Pictures is continuing to build up its slate of Marvel films. Veteran TV director S.J. Clarkson has signed on to develop the first female-centric movie from Sony’s catalog of Marvel characters, sources tell Variety.

    While it’s unconfirmed at the time who the character at the center will be, insiders say there is a strong possibility that the film will be based on the Madame Web comic-book character.

    Sony had no comment.

    At the moment, there isn’t a writer on board to pen the screenplay, nor a star attached to lead the movie. Sources say there is a possibility that the studio is looking for an A-list actor to join and then hire a writer to develop the film around them.

    MGM has acquired the rights to “Heroes & Villains,” a new take on the superhero genre from the director of “It Follows” and “Under the Silver LakeDavid Robert Mitchell.

    Mitchell has written the screenplay and will direct the feature film, though additional plot details are being kept under wraps.

    Mitchell will also produce “Heroes & Villains” along with Good Fear Content’s Chris Bender and Jake Weiner. Casting on the film will begin shortly.

    Blumhouse is developing “Our Lady of Tears,” a film based on a recent article about a mass hysteria epidemic that spread through an all-girls boarding school.

    Issa López (“Tigers Are Not Afraid”) is set to write and direct the film. The project is an adaptation of a story published by Epic Magazine and Vox and written by Daniel Hernandez. The outbreak, which may have had supernatural roots, took place at a strict Catholic school on the outskirts of Mexico City and afflicted a group of young women who came from impoverished families.

    Blumhouse is the producer of such horror hits as “Get Out,” “Us,” and “The Purge.” Epic’s journalism has inspired a number of big and small screen projects, including the Oscar-winning “Argo.”

    Snyder made the announcement on his Vero account on Wednesday morning, during a virtual “Man of Steel” watch party.

    Justice League” is a movie that underwent a lot of changes during its production — credited director Zack Snyder exited the movie early during production and Joss Whedon oversaw reshoots that went on for so long that Henry Cavill had to shoot a bunch of scenes as Superman with a mustache that he grew for another movie.

    A “Little Mermaid” sequel series could be headed to streaming, but not the place you would expect.

    The series, titled “Washed Up,” is in development at Peacock. It is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid,” the Danish fairy tale that the better-known Disney animated classic is loosely based on.

    The original story, first published in 1837, is much darker than the Disney-fied version but still follows the same basic story of a young mermaid princess who dreams of becoming human. However, in Andersen’s tale, the young princess kills herself at the end, though she ends up turning into an ethereal spirit.
